ASFE is an association of high profile CEO's from large, medium, and small
firms practicing in the geosciences. ASFE was established in 1969 as the Association of
Soil and Foundation Engineers. However, in 1993 the name was changed to better
represent its broader membership of geoprofessional firms located throughout the world.
Because of industry recognition, the acronym remains and the association's name is now
ASFE: Professional Firms Practicing in the Geosciences.
ASFE programs and materials are credited with overcoming liability problems so
significant that, in the mid and late 1960s, geoprofessional consultants were virtually
uninsurable. Now, professional liability insurance is readily available to
geoprofessionals. ASFE loss prevention programs and materials are geared principally
toward helping firms enhance the quality of their practice.
