RATIONALE FOR CREATING A NEW CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULE:

The SIC Code is used to classify industries; the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) schedule is used to classify areas of technology of interest to the DoD; the Library of Congress classification schedule of books also addresses Technology (Class T) and Science (Class Q). These, and other classification schemes are almost mutually exclusive, in that they address either industry or science and technology, but not both.

Moreover,

The old classification schemes do not have specific enough categories for such new fields. TechExpo wants to use a uniform classification schedule that addresses these issues, and can be used to classify different types of information, including:
  1. Hi-Tech Companies involved in manufacturing as well as R&D
  2. Science, Engineering and Technology Conferences that are attended by both academia and industry.
  3. Literature, trade magazines
  4. Technical organizations, engineering societies, and industry associations
With this new classification schedule, visitors to TechExpo can search the company data, conferences, and literature according to these categories.
There is no single approach to classifications. In many cases other categories may be used, and certain fields may belong in more than one category. Furthermore, the idea is not to create too many categories, and not too few. The schedule should allow each company to identify several fields into which it's activity may be classified.

This classification schedule is limited to Hi-Tech and it does not cover all general traditional industries; It covers (i) engineering sciences, and (ii) life sciences and medical technology.

The TechExpo Classification Schedule attempts to maintain a cross reference to:
