4. Customer cuts foils to size for use. A foil on its glass substrate is often cut before it is floated off. If the foil has thickness less than 0.4 micron, it can be easily cut with a single-edge razor blade. It is best to use a straightedge, supported above but not touching the foil, to guide the blade; the straightedge and foil are clamped or taped for rigidity.
5. A thicker foil is best cut in such a way that any tiny cracks produced in the cutting process cannot propagate into the uncut part of the foil. Use of a second razor blade is a simple way to accomplish this.
6. A foil can be floated by slowly immersing its substrate into a water bath by hand. The foil in this photo is on a glass slide; the slide is held with forceps.
